A saturated earth red color that is reminiscent of the red soils up at 2000 ft elevation of Rockpile vineyard and a nose that’s all about place! Mineral, mineral, mineral - terroir at its essence. This is followed by a sweet cassis and black cherry, iron and a feeling that this wine is tightly wound and ready to explode from the glass.
The palate shows incredible richness, a tight structure, and then a sweetness that will not only mesmerize but will open your eyes to the magic that is Rockpile Vineyard.

It was important to me to make a special wine for my youngest daughter. She is an incredibly talented artist, incredibly smart, and loves adventure. She is also hardheaded and stubborn. She has a softer side and a harder side, so does this wine. One produces the elegance and finesse and the other, the structure and depth of this wine. Together, they are the perfect balance. Intensely dark ruby red purple in color, it will stain the glass as you swirl it. A true reflection of my Haley’s personality.
I started Jeff Cohn Cellars with the help of my mother, Iris. One adorns the label as a tribute to her.
Appellation: Rockpile
Vineyard: Rockpile, sustainably farmed, vines planted in 2000
I've been making Rockpile Syrah since 2001. There is a magnetic force in this vineyard that pulls you in, and you feel that something amazing will be produced. These wines are as close to Hermitage Rouge as you will get.

The fruit is hand-picked then cold-soaked. I gently foot-stomp the fruit of which 30% is whole cluster, the rest is whole berry and de-stemmed. None is crushed. The wine goes through open-top, then 100% Malolactic fermentation and aged 18 months in large-format 80% new French oak and 20% neutral French oak barrels.

95 Jeb Dunnuck — The 2017 Syrah Rockpile Vineyard is another huge success in the vintage. From a great site in the Rockpile AVA of Sonoma County, its deep purple color is followed by a great bouquet of blueberries, iron, crushed rocks, ground pepper, and hints of smoked game. Structured and tannic on the palate, it reminds me of a young Cornas and needs 4-5 years of bottle age. It’s seriously impressive, though, and should have 15 years of overall longevity.
93+ The Wine Advocate, Erin Brooks — Inky in the glass, the 2017 Syrah Haley Rockpile Vineyard has bold scents of violet, tar, cassis and dried herbs with touches of menthol, milk chocolate and graphite. The full-bodied palate is dense and rich with a grainy frame and just enough freshness, finishing perfumed. Give it more time in bottle.
