Black purple color mesmerizes you as you swirl it in the glass. Once again this small production block of Rockpile Syrah (Serine) continues to produce wines that are so rich, deep, and mystifying.
A seamless purple and dark fiery garnet color. As always, this wine is the one Syrah that expresses the Rockpile terroir at its finest. Aromas of crème de cassis, charcuterie, wild dried herbs and just a light touch of lavender draw you into the glass. Elegance, voluptuous and intense, best describes the palate of this wine. Black fruits and savory notes of smoked meats, plus that Rockpile minerality that binds this wine, make it a seductive experience.

I love Syrah from Côte-Rôtie, and one of my favorite vineyards is Les Grandes Places. So, when some budwood was made available to me from this vineyard, I jumped on it.
The oldest selections of Syrah in the Northern Rhône's Côte-Rôtie are known as Serine - they are not a clone. This selection of Serine has produced a wine that is a ménage à trois of aromas and flavors that one finds only in the elegance of Côte-Rôtie, the intensity of Hermitage, and the pure essence of the Rockpile Vineyard.
When you taste this wine next to my other Rockpile Syrahs, you will taste its magic. I feel this to be one of my most complex wines. As Serine is considered the oldest Syrah, the name So Serine came to be!
I started Jeff Cohn Cellars with the help of my mother, Iris. One adorns the label as a tribute to her.
Appellation: Rockpile
Vineyard: Rockpile, sustainably farmed, vines planted in 1998
Planted at 2010-ft. elevation of granite, loam, clay, quartz, it's the heaviest, rockiest, and steepest vineyard at Rockpile. This elevation puts more stress on the vines producing thick-skinned and small berries. The granite adds a mineral backbone to the weight that the clay creates in the wine.

Vinification: 100% Syrah
The fruit is hand-picked then cold-soaked. I gently foot-stomp the fruit of which 40% is whole cluster, the rest is whole berry and de-stemmed. None is crushed. The wine goes through open-top, then 100% Malolactic fermentation and aged 18 months in large-format 100% new French oak barrels.

99 Jeb Dunnuck — Coming all from the Rockpile Vineyard in the Rockpile AVA inside the Larger Sonoma County appellation, the 2018 Syrah So Serine sports a deep purple hue to go with a straight-up thrilling bouquet of blueberries, blackberries, smoked game, bacon fat, and spring flowers. Powerful, full-bodied, deep, and intense, it nevertheless stays light on its feet and graceful. A thrill a second, this remarkable Syrah comes close to topping out my scale. Hats off to Jeff Cohn!
94 Wine Advocate, Erin Brooks — The 2018 Syrah So Serine comes from 20-year-old vines in the Rockpile vineyard. It was made with 30% whole cluster and aged 18 months in 100% new French oak. Deep ruby-purple in color, the nose offers red and black fruits, with wafts of thyme, lavender, iron and grilled meats. The full-bodied palate is pure, fresh and mineral-driven, finishing long and perfumed. It deserves another couple of years in bottle.
93 Connoisseurs' Guide to CA Wine — If no less deep in fully ripened Syrah fruit than any of its cellarmates in 2018, this edition of So Serine is not pushed by ripeness quite as much and, in comparison, more clearly reveals varietal detail. Make no mistake, it, too, is a big, well-extracted wine, but it conveys a sense of measured reserve that sets it apart and, for all of its density and ample girth, uncannily manages to suggest something akin to elegance, albeit of a somewhat still-nascent sort. It is both weighty and impeccably balanced with striking energy and length, and, if not the boldest of Cohn’s Syrahs, it is very arguably the classiest of the bunch and is destined to age beautifully for many years.
