This organic Dry Creek Vineyard was planted around 1890. Incredibly vibrant, dark cherry red color with aromatics that reminds one of a Southern Rhône wine complete with savory nuances of rosemary, sage and hints of lavender. Earthy with intense vibrancy that flows from the glass. On the palate this wine is both truly concentrated and rich with a medium to full-bodied mouthfeel. So sensual as it flows from the front-mid palate to a layered finish. A true experience of flavors and textures ranging from black cherry, savory, creamy and just a hint of freshly crushed black peppercorn.

I am always on the search for small, old vine vineyards. One day, the vineyard manager from Sweetwater Springs gave me a call and said he is working with incredible local old vine Zinfandel vineyard. My interest was piqued.
As, it turns out it, Cartee Vineyard is right around the corner from our Healdsburg tasting room, just on the border of Dry Creek thus allowing me to make a Dry Creek Zinfandel, but one with a very distinctive aromas and flavor profiles. If I had to compare it to something, it would be more Southern Rhône. The wine is so distinctive and unlike any other Zinfandels I have ever made.
I started Jeff Cohn Cellars with the help of my mother, Iris. One adorns the label as a tribute to her.

The fruit is hand-picked then cold-soaked. I gently foot-stomp the fruit of which 20% is whole cluster, the rest is whole berry and de-stemmed. None is crushed. The wine goes through open-top, then 100% Malolactic fermentation and aged for 18 months in 50% new and 50% neutral large format French oak barrels.

94 Wine Spectator, Tim Fish — Brambly and dynamic in structure, displaying rich, expressive black raspberry and cherry flavors. Offers savory anise and cracked pepper accents while building tension toward briary tannins.
92 Jeb Dunnuck, Audrey Frick — From a site down the road from Seghesio Vineyard and planted right on the edge of the appellation, the 2021 Zinfandel Cartee Vineyard is entirely Zinfandel. Boasting a rich purple/ruby hue, it’s effusive with aromas of wet river stone, a pretty flora character, pepper spice, fresh blackberry, and candied violets. Medium to full-bodied, it’s elegant all the way through, with a silky texture, a weightless feel, and hints of mocha through its long, clean finish. A lovely and appealing wine, it casts a large net for enjoyment and is drinking well now, although it should hold up well over the coming 8-10 years. Wines like this make me want to write more about old vine Zinfandel in Sonoma.
92 Wine Enthusiast, Tom Capo — Raspberry and blackberry aromas dominate the nose of this whole-cluster-fermented wine, with an edge of spicy pepper and cinnamon lurking just below the surface. The palate is vibrant and alive, showing juicy berry compote, licorice and clove flavors in a warm and grippy framework.
