An ambitious collaboration between Jeff Cohn of Sonoma County and Todd Alexander of Force Majeure in Walla Walla, Washington.
Aromatics of roasted earth and savory components soar from the glass. In the background blackberry-boysenberry starts to make itself the primary aspect of the aromas, with just a touch of black licorice and mocha. On the palate this wine is opulent and incredibly intense from the front palate to the finish. The primary aspect of this wine is terroir driven savory notes of Herbs de Provence, grilled meats, Australian black licorice and wild blackberries from this cobblestone vineyard.
As many of you know, and for those who do not, I am a person who is always looking for a new challenge. I have made more vineyard designated wines in my winemaking career than most. In fact, I have lost track of all the vineyards I have worked with. I have had the opportunity to produce wines in collaboration with Northern Rhône winemakers Pierre Gaillard, Francois Villard, Yes Gangloff and Yves Cuilleron and the Southern Rhone valley with Anne-Charlotte Melia Bachas of Chateau de La Font Du Loup. Obviously, I am always on a constant wine making journey.
The newest area I wanted to explore was Walla Walla Valley on the border of Oregon and Washington states. I have always been interested and inspired by the wines I have tasted from this region, especially from Christophe Baron (Cayuse), Sleight of Hand (Trey Busch and Keith Johnson) and from Todd Alexander (Force Majure and Pasxa).
For those who are not acquainted with Walla Walla and most importantly the Rocks District within, well its spectacular to not only look at, but to taste the wines that come from this AVA. The boundaries of the Rocks District of Milton-Freewater are based on the geographical distribution of soils of the Freewater series, which are derived from the cobblestone-rich gravels deposited by the Walla Walla River. The cobblestones consist entirely of basalt, a dark-colored volcanic rock (that was) derived by erosion of the Blue Mountains.
The Walla Walla River experiences an abrupt decrease in gradient and velocity where it exits the foothills of the Blue Mountains and enters the broad flat floor of the Walla Walla Valley. As the river slows, it no longer has the power to transport cobblestone-sized rocks and they accumulate on the floor of the channel. Eventually the channel is blocked and the river seeks a new course.
Each new channel is ultimately filled with cobblestones, so the location of the river is constantly shifting. As it shifts, it spreads a fan-shaped deposit of gravels across the landscape. Geologists refer to these types of landforms as alluvial fans.
The Freewater series soils that mantle the alluvial fan of the Walla Walla River have unique attributes that strongly influence the cultivation of wine grapes and impart distinctive sensory characteristics to the wines produced from those grapes. Due to their coarse texture, the gravelly soils are excessively well drained, which encourages the vines to root deeply in pursuit of water. The coarse texture also discourages erosion, so the area between the vine rows can be free of cover crops.
The rocky bare soil between the rows absorbs solar energy and transmits it efficiently to the root zone of the vines promoting earlier onset of the phenological stages of the vine growth such as bud break, flowering, veraison, and ripening. The surface stones radiate heat that warms the grape clusters and influences the production of phenolic compounds during ripening.
The relative abundances of mineral-derived nutrients in the basalt-based soils of the Rocks District are distinctive, especially when compared to the soils of the surrounding viticultural areas that have soils derived from wind-deposited silt.
2020 SJR Vineyard
Planted in 2007, SJR Vineyard was founded by Mary and Steve Robertson with the intent to create a world-class wine estate. The vineyard’s red varieties are planted to the, terroir-specific, MHT (mini-head-trained) vine structure where the vines are buried in their entirety to protect against the winter freezes that frequently pass through the Walla Walla Valley.
