Terroir - this site is pure volcanic rock, a 55° slope vineyard planted in an amphitheater-style arrangement, with a big patch of lavender in the middle of the vines. There are more large rosemary and lavender patches planted around the vineyard in the many rock piles that are scattered in and around the rows. I am the sole producer from this fascinating vineyard.
Different parts of the vineyard get full sun exposure throughout the day. All it takes is one look at this site and you know that something extraordinary will come from it. It's the most Northern Rhône style Zinfandel I have ever tasted. It constantly amazes me every time I open a bottle, how beautiful this wine is and how as it ages gains layers and layers of complexity.
I look at the luxurious black red color that looks like no other Zinfandel that I have ever had, and then one swirl and the aromas are just as mysterious as its color. In a blind tasting this wine always reminds me of what a potential blend of a Cote Rôtie and a Syrah from Chateauneuf du Pape would be if they were blended together.
I started Jeff Cohn Cellars with the help of my mother, Iris. One adorns the label as a tribute to her.

Vinification: 100% Zinfandel
The fruit is hand-picked then cold-soaked. I gently foot-stomp the fruit of which 15% is whole cluster, the rest is whole berry and de-stemmed. None is crushed. The wine goes through open-top, then 100% Malolactic fermentation and aged 18 months in 25% new French oak, 75% neutral French oak barrels.

94 James Suckling, Jim Gordon — This is a powerful, polished, 100% zinfandel wine that tastes as if it could be from the northern Rhone Valley. So full-bodied, drenched in dark fruit and broad in texture, yet with moderate tannins to balance the richness. The vineyard clings to a steep, rocky hillside riddled with volcanic rocks. Drink now or hold.
94 Jeb Dunnuck, Audrey Frick — Jeff Cohn found the Iron Hill Vineyard through a friend. Located on a 55-degree slope near the old Ravenswood facility, it’s all Zinfandel grown on volcanic rock with very little topsoil, and the estate uses 20% whole cluster on the Zinfandel bottlings to lean into the more savory side of the varietal. The 2021 Zinfandel Iron Hill Vineyard pours a red/black hue and has a more mineral-tinged tone, with notes of dark chocolate, dark scorched earth, plum, and lavender, and as it opens, it becomes more red-fruited. Seamless to the palate, it has a more savory slanting profile, with fine tannins and good lift on the finish, although it’s a more robust wine than the Cartee. This one I would like to retaste after another couple of years in bottle to see it lean into its more savory and herbaceous qualities. Drink 2025-2037.
93 Wine Spectator, Tim Fish — A Zin with pizzaz, this remains refined and focused, with wild berries, dark Asian spices and licorice flavors that build tension toward the zesty ending.
92 Wine Enthusiast, Tom Capo — Inky-dark ruby, almost black in the glass, this Zin is more structured and textured than many. The nose is classic blackberry-raspberry and spice aromas, with a bright streak of zesty acid running through the midpalate. Give this a few years in the cellar to integrate and it should become even more joyful.
