I have been making wine from this vineyard for 25 years and the magic just continues. Amazingly deep dark purple-blue color from the middle of the glass to the outer edge. Aromatically this wine reminds me more of a Chateauneuf du Pape from a warmer sector, with the focus being black fruits, roasted earth notes, aged meats and just a touch of sweet vanilla bean. On the palate, it is incredibly rich and focused on black berry and black cherry that are balanced with dark chocolate, lavender and sweet vanilla. A WOW factor Zinfandel!

First impressions are so important. During my interview with Kent Rosenblum of Rosenblum Cellars, we spent about 3 hours tasting through barrels. One of the Zinfandels that really was the highlight of that tasting was the old vine Zinfandel of St. Peter's Church. I really think this was one of the reasons I took the job to work with Kent.
I have been making Zinfandel from this vineyard since 1996. It’s a simple vineyard, on a simple piece of land, but it produces some of the most magical wines. Once again, this is a property that was farmed by Ulises Valdez. My friend truly had the Midas touch.
I started Jeff Cohn Cellars with the help of my mother, Iris. One adorns the label as a tribute to her.
Appellation: Alexander Valley
Vineyard: St. Peter's Church, organic — for me, it is one of the greatest Zinfandel vineyards, ever!
This heritage vineyard was originally planted in the 1880's with Zinfandel and mixed blacks. The 500-ft. elevation with alluvial-loamy and clay soils make this Zinfandel is unique. The loam adds life to the wine, while the clay adds richness and mouthfeel.

Vinification: 100% Zinfandel
The fruit is hand-picked then cold-soaked. I gently foot-stomp the fruit of which 15% is whole cluster, the rest is whole berry and de-stemmed. None is crushed. The wine goes through open-top, then 100% Malolactic fermentation and aged 18 months in 20% new French oak and 80% neutral French oak barrels.

95 James Suckling, Jim Gordon — A really substantial, dark and structured wine with lots of black fruit flavors and a firm texture. Jeff Cohn uses 25% whole clusters in the fermentation and blends in 15% petite Sirah. Very good concentration, focus and length. Combines robust blackberry and dark plum flavors with savory, leafy, sagey accents that add interest. Drink now or hold.
94 Wine Spectator, Tim Fish — Bold and full of personality, this Zin serves up deep notes of blackberry, bitter chocolate, licorice and fruitcake spices as it builds tension toward broad-shouldered tannins.
94 Jeb Dunnuck, Audrey Frick — From a vineyard Jeff has been working with since 1996, the 2021 Zinfandel St Peter's Church Vineyard has the addition of Petit Syrah and pours an inky black/purple color. The nose takes on even more richness, with headier spice aromas of toasted cardamom, boysenberry liqueur, loads of grilled rosemary, and sappy earth. It’s full-bodied, but remains remarkably weightless, with a great, savory toned finish with notes of Earl Grey tea. It has power but not weight. Drink 2025-2035.
91 Wine Enthusiast, Tom Capo — Fresh red raspberry and dried cranberry aromas lift the nose of this earthier-styled Zinfandel that gets a good amount of structure from 15% Petite Sirah. The resulting tannin on the palate is grippy, with a nice backbone of acidity to set off the black plum and licorice flavors that mingle on the tongue.
